Tarot Comparo: Ace of Cups

Let’s compare the Ace of Cups!

The Ace of Cups begins our journey through these two decks.

The Suit of Cups is strongly associated with water, and both of these cards showcase cool tones and water as a focus. Cups relates to the emotional and internal journey through life. Both cards are beautifully illustrated. I favor the darker tones in the Santa Muerte deck personally, but the vibrancy of the Tarot of the Divine deck is refreshing.

The interesting differences start with how these decks both convey their meanings through storytelling.

For those that have been with me for a while, you’ve seen how the Santa Muerte Deck likes to travel through a cohesive journey from Ace to Tens. The Tarot of the Divine deck features a different story on each card.

The Santa Muerte deck shows the Ace of Cups as a literal cup, our internal cup, our emotional centers, being filled. In the Tarot of the Divine Deck, we see a cup being filled with a dipper of water. This card is referencing the mythos of Matsuo’s Sake. I’ve linked an article here for your reference regarding Sake as a drink, as I’m not able to find any references to Matsuo’s Sake myth. If any one has any information, I would really appreciate it so I can learn a little more as well!

Both cards are very succinct in showing ‘filling your cup’, which has been a phrase used to describe bringing emotional fulfillment into your life. Upright, these cards represent the start of emotional and spiritual journeys. Reversed, represents emotional strife and blockages.

I feel with both cards, they are very easy to feel the meanings. As these cards come up in readings, it will get easier to read their messages. Especially as the cards interact with with other cards and within the spreads used.
