Tarot Comparo: Seven of Cups

Seven of Cups, from the Santa Muerte deck (left) and the Tarot of the Divine (right)

Let’s compare the Seven of Cups!

The Seven of Cups is a follow-up to the abundance we had in the Six of Cups to highlighting overabundance. This card also sees us returning to similar scenes for both cards. Both show a figure gazing at seven vessels; both are contemplating the choices before them. We do not see their faces, their backs are turned to us. However, we return to a more blue color scheme than we have seen in the last few cards, as well as a highlight on the cups themselves.

If you think the Seven of Cups from the Tarot of the Divines seems familiar, you would be right! This card is based off the world-renown tale of Aladdin. If you haven’t seen any of the adaptations, including the Disney Movie, the musical based off the Disney movie, various other movie productions, as well as the storybook which is popular to read to children, then I’ve included a link here to the Wikipedia page to give an overview. This card shows the scene in the story where Aladdin is in the cavern looking for the magic lamp, and has been given the choice to find the lamp before the cavern collapses on him.

Both cards showcase the overabundance that can come and the overwhelm with choices that is sometimes before us. These cards have appeared in reading for me when I am staring at too many options or decisions and find myself paralyzed with decision. This usually comes as a sign that I need to make a choice quickly to get out of the decision paralysis that is keeping me stuck. We can see in the Santa Muerte deck, the cup that has been chosen has flowers growing from it, perhaps signalling that this choice will be fruitful.
