Chronicles on Meditating: Intro to Meditation

Published by

It seems like the biggest advice any new witch receives is to: Meditate, Meditate, Meditate.

And there’s so much advice out there, stemming from witchcraft or mindfulness practices, that it almost seems like every corner of the internet is trying to shove this practice down the throats of every person clamoring for some guidance in this world.

To be completely honest, I have not been able to stand meditating. It’s too much sitting, being bored out of your mind in an attempt to quiet it? Maybe you’re like me; you just can’t get the hang of meditating and it just doesn’t seem to come to you at all. Maybe you’ve been in the same spot as me; you sit down, ready to ‘quiet the mind’ and breath deeply, and then – Nothing. No changes. Not even a little more peace.

It’s frustrating. Believe me. I hate that it feels like your entire practice hinges on being able to enter this state of quiet. But is the craft not the place to find what works best for your individual needs?

That’s where I come in. We’re going to go on a journey of discovery and investigation. We’re going to try different methods and applications.

This post will also contain links to the follow-up posts as they become published, so that as you are trying new methods yourself, you can reference back. I’m also going to include a link to a meditating worksheet, available to purchase and download at the store (sorry, gotta keep these lights on somehow!).

Meditating Posts

As we progress through the year, I’ll be giving you monthly check-ins, linked back here. Each monthly check-in will be posted every 4 weeks.

Here are some of the biggest things we’ll look into covering:

  • Guided Meditations as videos – what makes these work (or not)
  • Guided Meditations as audio/podcast – what makes these work (or not)
  • Common Meditation Advice
  • What meditation should feel like
  • What meditation isn’t
  • Building an actual practice around meditating
  • Meditating vs Grounding

If there’s more you want to see, send in a comment, or an email! Hell, send me a pigeon if you really feel like it!

Meditating Chronicle Worksheet

Why did I have trouble meditating? I am not sure. I think it’s because my brain gets too bored and will literally just make up stuff to keep itself entertained. I’m not opposed to meditating. I would love to do it more, but building a habit takes practice and commitment, no matter what kind of practice.

So I made myself a little worksheet, for accountability. This little worksheet is a great way to try for yourself, what will and won’t work – for You. Remember, this entire process, is for you to find the best way for you to practice witchcraft, and possibly your own spirituality.

Meditation Worksheet – Here you can download you’re own meditation worksheet, and use it for your own practice.

Meditation Types

Here, I’ll link back to different meditation types as I try them through out this year. As the posts become available, they’ll be linked back. If there’s one you’re looking for that we don’t cover, send me a message! Maybe I can cover it at a later time. Or come up with a way to feature some of that content!

  • Mantra/Prayer
  • Walking Meditation
  • Movement Meditation (such as Tai Chi or Yoga)
  • Candle Meditation
  • Body Scan
  • Guided
  • Breath-work
  • Mindfulness
  • Loving-Kindness – I just found this during some research and am interested to try it!
  • Visualization – I’d also like to go over this technique for those of us that have brains that don’t fully visualize
  • Water Meditation – Similar to candle Meditation

This is also why I made a whole worksheet! (Seriously, go buy it now. Please?) Stay tuned as we go through this year, actually learning how to build these practices, instead of reading a plain article that barely contains any details on HOW to apply these details to your own personal life.

How to get started

Most meditation can be self-led. It can be self-directed, and the actual act is free. Getting started has always thrown me off. It seems so hard to settle in, do the actual act of meditating, and then supposedly reap the benefits. So, I decided to get a bit more structured with it!

Meditating comes from so many different cultures and religions, and has been observed in so many different formats. So I’m going to try every kind of meditation that’s available, and see what works for Me. So here are some quick and dirty tips to get started for your own meditation trial and error!

  1. DO NOT try too hard. This is like anything new! Don’t discredit yourself because you can’t do it right away
  2. Try different methods! Different methods exist because they work for different people. Try a different method if you get stuck!
  3. Practice is just that! Practice. Try as much as can, even if it’s just for a few minutes. 2-3 minutes, even just a few days a week, is better than nothing!
  4. You know it’s working for you if it makes you feel better. Don’t worry about what everyone says about, shifting, or becoming one with the universe – if it makes you feel good, then it’s working!
  5. (Optional) Get my download to keep track of your progress! This step is optional completely. I’m only pushing it because I got bills to pay and I pay for this all out of pocket, and want to keep the site going. (I won’t judge if you come up with your own way at home! Do what works for you!)

We’ll meet back in a month, so practice, try, and remember – there is no shame. If it doesn’t work for you, we can keep trying! Because that’s the point of life – to keep on trying!
